Protests possible across Niger after Constitutional Court confirms elections of Mohamed Bazoum, March 21; inauguration scheduled April 2.

Informational

Event

Protests are possible across Niger, particularly in Niamey, through at least April 2 after the country's Constitutional Court confirmed the election of Mohamed Bazoum, March 21. An inauguration ceremony will be held April 2. Bazoum was elected with 55 percent of the vote, though opposition parties have rejected the outcome of the Feb. 21 second-round presidential polls. This will be Niger's first democratic transfer of power and comes after President Mahamadou Issoufou completed two five-year terms.

Authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security posture ahead of the April 2 inauguration. Tensions between supporters of rival political camps may continue and even increase following the Constitutional Court's decision. Localized business and transport disruptions could occur during any demonstrations that may materialize.

Advice

If operating in Niger, exercise increased vigilance through April 2. Avoid all demonstrations due to the possibility of violence. Keep away from areas where security personnel appear to be deploying. If clashes break out nearby, take shelter in a safe, nongovernmental building. Monitor trusted local news sources for developments. Heed all instructions from security personnel and allow additional travel time near gatherings.
