Militant attacks kill at least 58 in Banibangou, Tillaberi, near Niger's border with Mali, March 15. Three-day mourning period announced.

Unidentified militants killed at least 58 people during an attack on travelers in the vicinity of Banibangou, Tillaberi Region, March 15. Officials announced the attack March 16 and stated that a three-day mourning period will be in effect from March 17. Authorities have also stated that security has been increased in the area in response to the attack, and investigations are ongoing. No group has as yet claimed responsibility for the incident; however, al-Qaeda-affiliated and Islamic State militants frequently attack settlements in the Niger-Mali border area.

Context

This is the latest high fatality incident in the border area in 2021. Militants killed more than 100 people during an attack on the villages of Tchombangou and Zaroumdareye near Niger's border with Mali Jan. 2. The incidents highlight the severe threat of militant violence in the area, and further attacks are almost certain.
