Spain: Activists to protest COVID-19 restrictions in Palma de Mallorca March 1

Activists and workers in catering sector to protest in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, from 1030 March 1. Increased security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

The Resistencia Balear activist group will lead a protest in Palma de Mallorca from 1030 March 1 to denounce COVID-19 restrictions on restaurants and the wider catering industry. Participants will gather in Placa d'Espanya before marching through the city center. Although the exact route is unclear, organizers intend to march through Placa Major and Placa de Cort before rallying at the Consolat de Mar. Although the level of participation is unclear, attendance will likely not exceed a thousand participants.

Additional police will likely deploy to monitor the protest. Large crowds and associated security measures will likely prompt localized transport disruptions in the surrounding area. Although the organizers have received permission to protest, current COVID-19 measures in Spain place restrictions on public gatherings, and police may intervene if participants are deemed to be breaching these restrictions. The protest is likely to be largely peaceful, though isolated clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid the protest as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Allow extra time for travel in the protest area the morning of March 1.
