Authorities have declared a national day of mourning for the state funeral of prominent Buddhist religious leader Kotugoda Dhammawasa at Independence Square in Colombo from 16:00 March 25. The funeral procession between Mount Lavinia and Independence Square will begin at 13:00 and move along Galle Road. Dhammawasa passed away March 22. Hundreds of people are likely to attend the ceremony.

Security personnel will monitor the event and impose traffic diversions along affected routes such as Independence Avenue. Officials in Colombo District have also ordered the closure of establishments selling meat and alcohol March 25.
