Opposition politician, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, has been arrested during protests in Kampala, March 15. The arrest follows the opposition politician's call for further demonstrations over the January 14 presidential elections results. Demonstrations had been reported in the City Square area of downtown Kampala prior to the arrest.
Further protests are likely in Kampala following the arrest of the politician. The general security situation in Uganda will also likely remain tense through at least late March as groups may adhere to the initial call for demonstrations. Incidents could occur in major cities, particularly near government buildings, political party offices, and public squares. Any gatherings that materialize could draw hundreds of participants.
Authorities will almost certainly maintain an increased security presence in Kampala through at least March 15. Demonstrators have clashed with security forces in the past, and police may use tear gas, water cannon, batons, rubber bullets, and live ammunition to disperse gatherings.
