Uganda: Further opposition protests possible in Kampala through Dec. 10 /update 2
Further protests are possible in Kampala, Uganda, through Dec. 10 amid the detention of an opposition figure.
Further opposition protests are possible in Kampala through at least Dec. 10. The possible unrest is related to the detention and trial in Kampala of opposition figure Kizza Besigye of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC). His next court date is scheduled for Dec. 10.
Besigye was arrested in Kenya with another opposition member on Nov. 16 and is currently in custody in the Luzira Prison in Kampala. Several related incidents have occurred since. During the court hearing at the Makindye Court in Kampala on Dec. 2 minor confrontations occurred between Besigye's legal team, supporters and security forces in front of the court. On Nov. 25, police arrested FDC supporters along the Sezibwa Road in Kampala; they were marching towards the Kenya High Commission.
Several opposition politicians have denounced his arrest and may call for protests in the coming days. Gatherings are more likely at the next court appearance at the Makindye Court on Dec. 10. Other likely gathering locations include the High Commission of Kenya and the Luzira Prison. A heightened security presence will likely meet protests. Security forces will probably disperse any gathering that materializes. Localized disruptions are likely in the vicinity of any protests that occur. Related demonstrations elsewhere in the country are possible.
Exercise heightened caution near possible demonstration sites. Avoid all protests as a precaution. Plan for extra travel time near protest sites. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Do not travel through protest roadblocks. Heed instructions from authorities.
