Chile: Additional protests likely across Chile through April 25 in response to controversial presidential announcement

Further protests likely in Chile through at least April 25 . Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.

Warning

Event

Additional protests are likely across Chile through at least April 25 in reaction to a recent announcement that President Sebastian Pinera plans to petition the courts to block a move by Congress that would allow Chileans to withdraw funds from their pension accounts due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Activists first began staging nighttime roadblocks and vandalizing businesses on April 21 immediately following the announcement, with the number of such incidents increasing over subsequent days. Protests will probably further increase in number and intensity over the weekend. While organizers have not announced any specific rally locations, demonstrations are most likely in major cities, such as Santiago, Antofagasta, Concepcion, Valparaiso, and Vina del Mar. Activists could particularly gather at government buildings and police stations.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy increased security near any potential protest locations. Demonstrators could block roads and highways, especially at night; commercial properties could be targeted for vandalism. Clashes are possible, especially if protesters throw objects at police and police stations, or if security forces attempt to forcibly disperse protesters and reopen roads.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Heed the instructions of security personnel. If violence breaks out, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-governmental building. Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks; wait for police to clear them before proceeding.
