Sri Lanka: Increased security measures in place nationwide for Christian observances through April 5

Authorities are bolstering security across Sri Lanka through at least April 5 for the Good Friday nationwide public holiday April 2, as well as other Christian observances. Security personnel will deploy to churches, tourist spots, hotels, and crowded public spaces like shopping malls, open markets, and transport hubs. The tightest security is likely around large churches in urban centers during Maundy Thursday (April 1), Good Friday (April 2), and Easter (April 4) worship services, though the events will likely be smaller than in past years due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Although there are no specific threats to the holiday, security forces are likely to be on high alert for possible militant attacks, mainly by Islamist groups, in light of the May 2019 serial bombings. Heightened deployment and intensive personnel and vehicle checks are probable around potential militant target sites. Processing delays may occur at the Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB).
