Warning

Event

Armed clashes have occurred in Geneina, the administrative capital of West Darfur State, since April 4, with violence reportedly ongoing as of April 5. Local officials stated that the violence has left at least 18 people dead, with 54 more wounded. As the violence is ongoing, the death toll is likely to increase. Information on the cause of the violence remains limited, but it is occurring between local militias and people from the Masalit community and has spread to multiple parts of the city. Further information is unavailable.

Latest reports indicate that security personnel have not yet responded to the clashes; however, they are likely to deploy throughout the city in the coming hours. Increased security measures, such as roadblocks and additional security checkpoints, will likely prompt localized transport disruptions. The clashes could impact travel on the A5 road, which leads to the shared Sudan-Chad border, approximately 20 km (13 miles) west of Geneina. Authorities could implement a curfew as they have done on similar occasions in the past. Additional violence between communities or with security services is possible in the coming days.

Advice

Remain in a secure location and minimize movement as far as practically possible if operating in Geneina. If additional clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Heed all instructions from security personnel.
