Sudan: Protests and increased security likely to continue in El-Fasher, North Darfur, through early May
Additional protests over shortage of food and services likely to persist in El-Fasher, Sudan, through early May. Avoid all demonstrations.
Event
Student protests and associated acts of violence will likely persist in North Darfur through early May. The demonstrations began early April to denounce the worsening socio-economic situation, including shortages of bread and fuel, and rising inflation. Authorities suspended all schools until further notice, April 11, following an attack by protesters on the residence of the governor of North Darfur, during which at least three security officers were injured.
Authorities will almost certainly maintain an elevated security posture until the protests abate. Increased security measures, such as roadblocks and additional security checkpoints, are likely and will prompt localized transport disruptions.
Context
Rising prices, scarcity in basic supplies, and cash shortages throughout Sudan sparked initial protests in the country in mid-December 2018; these evolved into sustained anti-government demonstrations that led to the resignation of former President Omar Al-Bashir in April 2019. The government has been unable to introduce serious reforms to address the situation, prompting recurrent demonstrations. Shortages in cash and supplies, such as fuel, will continue to disrupt commercial and transportation activities in the country through 2021.
Advice
Avoid all large public gatherings and concentrations of security personnel. Do not attempt to drive through areas where protesters are blocking roads. Leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure location away from schools or government buildings if violence erupts nearby. Seek updated information from trusted local sources on road conditions before traveling in the area. Plan for public transportation and road travel delays. Heed the directives of the security forces.
