Fiji: Officials order lockdown for Suva and Nausori 23:00 May 14-04:00 May 19 amid COVID-19 concerns

Authorities to implement 24-hour curfew in Suva and Nausori, Fiji, 23:00 May 14-04:00 May 19 amid ongoing COVID-19 activity.

Critical

Event

The Fijian government will place Suva and Nausori on lockdown 23:00 May 14-04:00 May 19 due to ongoing COVID-19 activity in both locations. Officials will treat the areas - already designated as containment zones - as a single entity during the lockdown. Residents must remain at home 24 hours per day during the period. It is unclear if officials will permit some public movements during the lockdown, but authorities will almost certainly allow travel for medical emergencies. Most businesses will remain closed, as the government has announced plans to provide rations for residents during the later days of the lockdown if necessary.

Security personnel continue to erect checkpoints at entry and exit points to the cities, and officials will prohibit travel to and from the joint lockdown zone unless for approved reasons. Significant business and transport disruptions are likely until the order ends. Authorities could further extend the measures, particularly if health staff discovers a substantial number of new COVID-19 cases.

Advice

Abide by government directives. Avoid nonessential movement during the lockdown period. Consider stockpiling food, water, and other essential items in advance. Remain cooperative if questioned by law enforcement officers.
