A magnitude-5.6 earthquake occurred near the coast of Guatemala and El Salvador at 01:17 May 12. The epicenter was about 62 km (39 miles) west-southwest of Acajutla, El Salvador. The tremor occurred at a depth of approximately 51 km (32 miles). Moderate shaking likely occurred near the epicenter and light shaking may have occurred in southern Guatemala and coastal parts of El Salvador. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties because of the earthquake. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are possible over the coming days.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage.
