Event
Unidentified assailants attacked Fantio, Tillaberi Region, May 12, killing at least five civilians and wounding two others. The attackers reportedly launched the attacks using motorcycles. Investigations into the attack are ongoing and there have been no claims of responsibility for the attack as yet.
Heightened security and associated transport disruptions such as roadblocks and checkpoints are likely in the impacted area in the near term. Further armed attacks remain likely.
Context
This is the latest incident in a series of attacks in western Niger in 2021. In March, assailants attacked a vehicle convoy in Bani Bangou, Tillaberi Region, killing at least 58 people. Several villages were targeted in the Tahoua Region March 21, leaving over 100 people dead. An assault on a village located in western Tillaberi left at least 19 people dead April 17 and up to 20 others were killed in early May. Islamist militants operating in the tri-border area (Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso) are usually suspected of perpetrating the violence, but armed bandits also contribute to the deteriorating security environment.
Advice
Exercise caution in Tillaberi. Heed the directives of the authorities. Liaise with trusted contacts prior to travel in rural areas and at night outside of major urban centers. Travel with identification to facilitate movement through checkpoints. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
