Sudan: Authorities update COVID-19-related restrictions as of May 18 /update 21

Authorities in Sudan update COVID-19 restrictions as of May 18; updated international travel measures remain in place.

Critical

Event

Authorities in Sudan have updated COVID-19 restrictions from May 18. Khartoum International Airport (KRT) remains open. However, incoming international passengers from India or travelers who have been in India in the last 14 days will be denied entry. Travelers from Ethiopia and Egypt will be retested at the port of entry, with passengers who test positive placed into quarantine.

Other travelers require a negative result from a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) COVID-19 test taken no more than 72 hours prior to entering the country. Additionally, all travelers must self-isolate for 14 days after arrival. Persons six years of age and under are exempt from these requirements. Sudanese citizens and residents are tested for COVID-19 on arrival. Persons seeking to depart Sudan require a negative PCR test obtained within 72 hours before departure. Travelers suspected of having COVID-19 may be taken to isolation centers at the Khartoum and Omdurman teaching hospitals, Jebra Trauma Center, and the Universal Hospital in Khartoum North.

Authorities have lifted the travel bans imposed on all flights from the UK, Netherlands, and South Africa. After arrival, passengers from these countries must also report any symptoms to health officials. COVID-19 restrictions on land borders have largely been lifted; however, the eastern border with Ethiopia remains closed due to the insecurity in northern Ethiopia.

Domestic Measures
Domestic restrictions have also been updated with authorities announcing the closure of schools and universities for at least one month from May 18. Gatherings, parties, religious services, and social events remain banned. Public transportation is operating.

Authorities could reimpose, extend, further ease, or otherwise amend any restrictions with little-to-no notice depending on disease activity over the coming weeks.
