Uganda: Medical interns threaten strike from May 17

Healthcare interns threaten indefinite strike across Uganda from May 17. Health services disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Medical interns represented by the Federation for Uganda Medical Interns have threatened to undertake an indefinite strike from May 17. The purpose of the planned work stoppage is to protest the alleged underpayment of interning doctors and graduate nurses. Although labor leaders have announced no specific plans for such gatherings, striking healthcare workers could also hold protests and pickets as part of the walkout.

Should the strike go ahead, facilities affected by the strike will likely maintain a minimum level of care; however, disruptions to nonemergency medical services are likely for the duration of the action. An increased demand is also possible at private facilities. Longer wait times and limited appointment options may also occur.

Advice

Confirm all medical appointments from May 17. As a standard security precaution, keep away from any strike-related demonstrations that may materialize.
