Iran: Petrochemical sector workers likely to strike through at least end June

Petrochemical sector workers in Iran likely to strike through at least end June. Protests, increased security likely.

Warning

Event

Workers in the petrochemical sector are likely to strike nationwide through at least end June to demand higher salaries and improved working conditions. Local reports indicate that the strike began in Bidkhoon, Bushehr Province, June 19. As of June 22, strike activity has been reported in Esfahan, Khuzestan, and Tehran provinces.

Striking workers will likely stage protests as part of the action. Protests are most likely to materialize near petrochemical refineries, government buildings, and public squares. Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely near large protests; isolated skirmishes between security forces and demonstrators cannot be ruled out. Localized fuel shortages remain a possibility, depending on the duration of the strike.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to the potential for clashes. Heed the advice of security personnel. Allow additional driving time if operating near protest venues and affected areas.
