Sudan: Activists likely to stage nationwide demonstrations June 3
Activists likely to demonstrate across Sudan June 3; heightened security, transport disruptions likely near gathering sites.
Event
Activists are likely to stage demonstrations across Sudan June 3 to mark the second anniversary of the violent dispersal of an anti-government sit-in protest outside of the military headquarters in Khartoum. Related rallies are likely in major cities, including in the capital, as well as in Port Sudan, Nyala, and Kassala.
The US Embassy in Khartoum issued a corresponding security alert on June 2, warning of nationwide demonstrations and reporting that authorities will close some roads in central Khartoum through June 4.
Security personnel will likely monitor the gatherings and may try to disperse the demonstrations if they are disruptive. Clashes between participants and police cannot be ruled out. The demonstrations and associated heightened security measures may cause localized transport disruptions near gathering sites.
Advice
As a precaution, avoid all demonstrations that may materialize, as well as potential rally sites and locations where security forces appear to be assembling. Use alternative routes to avoid demonstration venues; allow additional time to reach destinations.
