Ukraine: Protest ongoing outside Constitutional Court in Kyiv June 3
Demonstration ongoing outside Constitutional Court in Kyiv, Ukraine, June 3; disruptions likely, clashes possible.
Event
Thousands of activists are protesting in central Kyiv the early afternoon of June 3 to denounce the controversial sale of agricultural land. Participants have gathered near the Constitutional Court, which is considering whether a related law breaches the country’s constitution.
The presence of large numbers of protesters and associated security measures have stopped traffic on Zhylianska street; further disruptions to public transport, as well as traffic congestion on parallel routes, are possible. Although the protest is currently peaceful, clashes between activists and police are possible, particularly if the former attempt to breach security cordons around the court building or fail to disperse when ordered. Police will likely respond forcefully to any disorder, including with batons, water cannons, and tear gas. While bystanders are unlikely to be targeted in any violence, they would face a significant indirect threat in the vicinity.
Advice
Avoid the protest as a routine security precaution and to mitigate any associated disruptions. Anticipate security-related movement restrictions in the vicinity of the Constitutional Court on the afternoon of June 3. Leave the area immediately at the first sign of a confrontation.
