Bahrain: Activists to stage protest in Diraz from 20:00 July 26
Opposition activists plan to protest in Diraz, Bahrain, from 20:00 July 26. Violence possible; avoid all protests.
Event
Opposition activists in Bahrain have called for a demonstration at the Diraz roundabout from 20:00 July 26. The purpose of the protest is to demand the release of political prisoners within the country. Additional, unannounced protests could materialize at other locations and times, particularly within predominantly Shi'a towns on the outskirts of Manama.
Localized traffic disruptions are likely around the demonstration. In the past, protesters have burned tires and, in certain instances, have targeted security forces with Molotov cocktails and crude explosive devices. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible in the vicinity of the roundabout; activists and security forces have clashed in previous protests. Police have routinely resorted to tear gas and stun grenades to disperse protesters.
Context
Anti-government protests have been a persistent issue since the 2011 uprising, which stemmed from the long-standing perception among members of the Shi'a majority that they are politically and economically marginalized. Several human rights organizations routinely accuse the Bahraini government of mistreating political prisoners. Protests over prisoners' rights have spiked in recent months, partly due to unconfirmed reports of a COVID-19 outbreak within Bahraini prisons.
Advice
Avoid the protest due to the potential for violence; if a related gathering materializes near you, leave the area immediately. Do not take photographs. Allow extra time if driving near the affected area; consider planning alternative routes around the demonstration site.
