A magnitude-5.1 earthquake occurred near Valparaiso, Chile, at 08:14 July 31. The epicenter was about 135 km (84 miles) west-northwest of Santiago. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 26 km (16 miles), and light shaking was probably felt throughout central Chile. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, significant damage is unlikely.
