Disruptions will likely continue in parts of Western Europe over the coming days following bouts of thunderstorms with heavy rainfall, strong winds, and flooding on July 15. Expecting water levels on the Meuse River to rise another 1.5 meters (5 feet), the mayor of Liege, Belgium, has advised residents - particularly those living along the banks of the river - to leave the city or seek shelter on higher ground, if they are able to. Authorities have issued evacuation orders for parts of central Liege, with vehicles being barred from entering the city and shops having closed at 15:00 July 15. Authorities in the city of Verviers, located about 22 km (14 miles) southeast of Liege, have imposed a curfew from 21:00 July 15 through 06:00 July 16 in an effort to stem looting amid the storm's impact. At least six storm-related deaths have been reported across Belgium.

Red-level warnings for heavy rainfall and flooding are in place in Luxembourg, while orange-level warnings are in effect across northeastern France, Liechtenstein, and southern and central Switzerland. Yellow-level warnings for flooding, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall are in place for the rest of the affected area. Authorities will likely issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming days.

Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where the soil has become saturated by heavy rainfall.

The severe weather will likely contribute to transport disruptions throughout the region. Floodwaters and debris flows may render some bridges, rail networks, or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters. Traffic and commercial trucking delays might occur along regional highways. Flooding downpours could inundate some low-lying roads in areas with poor drainage. Strong winds might also pose a hazard to high-profile vehicles. Hazardous weather conditions might cause flight delays and cancellations at regional airports.

Advice

Monitor local media for weather-related updates and advisories. Confirm all transport reservations. Stay away from elevated streams, creeks, and other watercourses that are prone to flash flooding.
