Libya: Clashes erupt between security forces and militia group in Tripoli July 22

Increased security likely in central Tripoli, Libya, following clashes between security forces and militia group July 22.

Warning

Event

Increased security is likely in central Tripoli over the coming days following clashes that broke out between the Special Deterrence Forces (SDF) and forces led by prominent militia leader Abdul Ghani al-Kikli (also known as Ghneiwa) in the Ben Ashour and Ras Hassan neighborhoods July 22. Clashes were previously reported between the Ghneiwa militia and the Judicial Police, which is allied with the SDF, in central Tripoli in April. The previous round of violence broke out in reaction to the arrest of one of al-Kikli's bodyguards and the subsequent retaliatory detainment of seven members of the Judicial Police. The cause of the July 22 fighting was not immediately clear.

Tensions remain heightened in central Tripoli and further confrontations are possible between the Ghneiwa militia and the SDF and Judicial Police in the coming days.
