South Africa: Rallies denouncing COVID-19-related restrictions planned in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban July 24

Rallies against COVID-19 restrictions planned in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, South Africa, at 11:00 July 24. Disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Activists plan to demonstrate at multiple locations in South Africa at 11:00 July 24 as part of the "Worldwide Demonstration" global campaign against COVID-19-related restrictions. Tens to hundreds of people are likely to attend the rallies. Participants will likely demonstrate at and in the vicinity of the following areas:

  • Witkoppen Park, Johannesburg, Gauteng Province

  • Sea Point Promenade, Cape Town, Western Cape Province

  • Blue Lagoon, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal Province

Authorities will almost certainly deploy a police presence near the rallies as a precaution. Localized transport disruptions are likely around the demonstrations. Current COVID-19 measures in place in South Africa restrict public gatherings, and authorities could shut down or ban rallies deemed to be in breach of these restrictions. The gatherings will likely remain peaceful, though low-level scuffles at some events cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate the impact of associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check local media sources for up-to-date information on local events, and allow extra time for travel in any rally-affected areas July 24.
