Pro-Palestinian activists plan to protest near the US embassy, consulates, and foreign business head offices in several cities across the country on Nov. 29 as part of the "International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People." The amount of participants the events may draw remain unclear. Protests are planned at the following sites:
Cape Town: Protest near the US Consulate, Reddam Avenue, from 10:00.
Cape Town: Protest near the Amazon offices, Observatory Road, from 10:00.
Durban: Protest at the Diakonia Centre, 10:30.
Durban: Protest near the US Consulate, West Street, from 11:00.
Durban: Protest near North Beach, 17:00.
Johannesburg: Protest near the US Consulate, Leila Khaled Drive, 14:00.
Pretoria (Tshwane): Protest near the US Embassy, Pretorius Street, 14:00.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near protest locations, especially the consulates. Counter-protests, while unlikely, remain possible. Minor clashes between protesters and police, as well as counterprotesters, cannot be ruled out.
Avoid protest areas as a precaution. Refrain from discussing sensitive topics, including the situation in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, in public spaces, especially with unfamiliar persons. Plan for extra travel time near protest sites. Reconfirm embassy and consulate appointments. Heed instructions from authorities.
Since the Israel-Hamas war broke out in October 2023, related demonstrations have regularly been held in South Africa. While violence has been reported at some rallies, most have remained peaceful. The most frequent gatherings have occurred in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Pretoria; there remains an elevated risk of clashes between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli activists, both notably engaged in clashes in Cape Town in November 2023.
