Fishers have launched protests in several locations throughout Chile as of Aug. 4, to demand government officials to include them in a support program created to help small businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Activists have built roadblocks and clashed with police in several regions of Chile, including Maule, Biobio, Antofagasta, and Coquimbo, since Aug. 3.
As of early Aug. 4, the largest disruptions have been reported in Constitucion, Maule region, where activists have built roadblocks along Route L30 M, and clashes with police have been reported. Activists have said they plan to maintain the protests throughout the country in the coming days.
Protests, including roadblocks along inter-city highways, are possible Aug. 4 and in the coming days, especially near coastal cities in Maule, Biobio, Antofagasta and Coquimbo regions. Protests near government buildings in Santiago may also occur. Clashes are likely if protesters block major roads. Significant transport disruptions are possible.
