Members and supporters of indigenous organizations plan to hold protests across the Totonicapan Department in Guatemala Aug. 20 to demand the resignations of President Alejandro Giammattei and Attorney General Consuelo Porras. Organizers plan to set up roadblocks on the main roads of the department until at least 17:00 Aug. 20.
Significant disruptions to traffic have already been reported on km 288 of Highway 1 (CA 1) in San Cristobal Totonicapan. Further disruptions are likely across the department in the areas of San Francisco El Alto, San Andres Xecul, Momostenango, Santa Maria Chiquimula, San Bartolo, and Santa Lucia La Reforma.
Demonstrators will likely set up roadblocks along main roads amid the protests; consequent transport disruptions are likely on routes across the department Aug. 20. Heightened security measures and associated clashes are possible near roadblocks and demonstration sites.
