Guinea-Bissau: UNTG calls for nationwide public sector strike Aug. 4-15

The National Union of Guinean Workers (UNTG) has called for a nationwide strike, Aug. 4-15. The action, the latest in a series of protests and strikes since late 2020, is to demand better working conditions and wages.

Disruptions to public services, including the health sector, are likely for the duration of the strike action. In the health sector, the action could impact non-emergency services at government hospitals; facilities will likely continue to provide emergency and COVID-19 treatment. Increased demand could disrupt services at private facilities.

UNTG has led several protests in recent weeks, and further protests are likely during the forthcoming strike period. Protests, should they occur, are likely in urban centers, including Bissau, Bafata, Gabu, and Bubaque. In towns and cities, protests are likely near government buildings, such as the National Assembly in Bissau and UNTG offices, including the UNTG Headquarters in Bissau.

Security forces will almost certainly deploy to and attempt to disperse any gatherings that occur. Clashes are possible at all related events. Protests and security force deployments are likely to result in localized ground travel disruptions.
