Suspected Boko Haram militants attacked the village of Baroua in the Diffa region's Bosso township during the night of Aug. 24-25. The ensuing clashes with government troops left 16 soldiers dead and 9 others wounded; Ministry of Defense sources also claim about 50 of the assailants were also killed in the action. Despite government suspicions that Boko Haram was behind the incident, no group has as yet claimed responsibility.
Heightened security and military operations are likely in and around Bosso township over the coming days. Officials could implement movement restrictions, including checkpoints and curfews. Further attacks of a similar nature targeting other villages in the Diffa region are possible.
