Poland: Free speech activists to demonstrate in urban centers nationwide Aug. 10

Free speech activists to demonstrate in urban centers across Poland from 18:00 Aug. 10; increased security, localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

The Democracy Defense Committee plans to lead demonstrations in urban centers across Poland Aug. 10. The action is to denounce proposed legislation that would create additional restrictions on granting broadcasting licenses to foreign media companies. Critics argue the bill would act to restrict freedom of speech. The largest action will take place in Warsaw, where activists will gather outside the Sejm from 18:00; participation will likely be in the thousands. Additional demonstrations are confirmed at 18:00 in the following locations:

  • Gdansk: Fontanna Neptuna

  • Katowice: Rynec Plac

  • Krakow: Rynek Glowny

  • Lodz: Plac Wolnosci

  • Poznan: Plac Wolnosci

  • Szczecin: Plac Pawla Adamowicza

  • Wroclaw: Pregierz

Further demonstrations will take place in additional towns and cities nationwide; likely locations for gatherings are central squares and outside government offices. Attendance will vary by location.

Additional police will deploy to monitor the actions. Large crowds and associated security measures, including possible road closures or movement restrictions, will likely prompt localized transport disruptions in affected areas; public transport may be canceled or diverted. Isolated clashes between police and protesters are possible, particularly if activists attempt to breach any security cordons. Bystanders are unlikely to be directly targeted in any violence but would face an indirect threat of harm.

Advice

Avoid the demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check local transport conditions before beginning journeys and allow extra time for travel in affected areas the evening of Aug. 10.
