Senegal: Additional flood-related unrest likely following demonstrations in Dakar Aug. 22

Further protests over flooding likely in Dakar, Senegal, into at least late August. Heightened security and transport disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

Further protests and associated civil unrest are possible in the coming days following demonstrations that took place Aug. 22 in the Diamaguene Sicap Mbao, Keur Massar, and Tivaouane Diacksao areas of Dakar. The purpose of the protests was to criticize the government's response to ongoing flooding in various parts of the capital. Additionally, protesters have blocked road access on major highways, including between Dakar and Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS) in recent days.

If flood-related protests continue to occur, heightened security operations and localized transportation disruptions are likely. Clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.

Context

Protests may continue well into the coming month if the government's response to the flooding does not improve. West Africa's annual rainy season will through September, increasing the likelihood of flooding and associated property damages and economic impacts.

Advice

Monitor local media for updates and advisories in the days ahead. Confirm all transport reservations prior to travel. Make allowances for possible supply chain disruptions, particularly in areas affected by flooding and or/landslide events.
