An explosion occurred on the outskirts of Mogadishu, Aug. 17. The blast reportedly targeted and killed the local district commissioner in Garasbaaley as well as two bodyguards. Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the blast.

Authorities will likely maintain an elevated security presence at the blast site. Localized disruptions are likely.

Context

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large areas of southern and central Somalia and stages frequent attacks across the country, including in the capital city, Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the UN-backed government.

Avoid the area until officials give the all-clear. Heed all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time in the area.
