Overland transport disruptions are ongoing amid a protest in the Mhluzi low-income area near Middelburg in Mpumalanga province Aug. 19. Protesters have erected roadblocks using tires and police have deployed to quell the protests. As of the morning on Aug. 19, there is a large police presence and numerous road closures, notably at the N11 highway entrance to Mhluzi. Some participants have reportedly attacked motorists. Reports also indicate that streets in vicinity of the Mhluzi Police Station are closed. Participants have organized protests to oppose local tax increases.

Security forces are likely to remain deployed to manage and monitor the potential additional gatherings. Clashes are possible if demonstrators ignore police orders to disperse. Transportation disruptions in the area are likely during any further protest action.

Avoid all protests. Do not attempt to cross any protester roadblocks and obey all official instructions. Monitor local media for updates on the status of roads as protest locations may not be announced in advance and allow extra time for travel in the vicinity of any gatherings. Exit the area at the first sign of any confrontation.
