Sudan: Flood threat persists along the Nile in northern parts of Sudan, Aug. 3 /update 1

Officials in northern parts of Sudan are on alert, Aug. 3, ahead of possible flooding threat near the Nile.

Warning

Event

Officials in the Northern State are on alert for flooding near the Nile due to rising water levels as of Aug. 3. Water levels are also forecast to reach flood level in Khartoum, Aug. 3. Officials have indicated that floodwaters along the river are forecast to continue increasing before stabilizing within 48-72 hours. River Nile State may also be impacted in the coming days. Associated flooding has already caused infrastructure damage further south, particularly in Gezira, Qadarif, and Sennar, in recent days.

Authorities could issue evacuation orders for flood-prone communities over the coming days. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are possible where significant flooding occurs. Floodwaters and debris flows may render some bridges or roadways impassable. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters. Localized business disruptions may occur in low-lying areas; some businesses might not operate at full capacity because of flood damage to facilities, possible evacuations, and employees' inability to reach work sites.

Advice

Heed the directives of the local authorities. Exercise caution if operating near the Nile in Khartoum, River Nile State, or Northern State. Plan for localized ground travel delays. Reconfirm the status of road routes, including bridges, before travel. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
