Trinidad and Tobago: Nationwide flooding causes disruptions, late Aug 18

Event

Heavy rain led to flooding in Trinidad and Tobago, as of late Aug. 18. The most impacted areas include southern and western Trinidad. The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service has issued an orange (second-highest level on a three-tier scale) riverine flood alert for western Trinidad through at least Aug. 19. Water levels in the Caroni are high, which could result in further flooding. Authorities have reported that there is flooding in low-lying areas. No evacuation orders have been issued, however, officials could issue new warnings or evacuations in response to the situation in the coming hours.

Floodwaters and debris flows could render bridges or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Penal Road is impassable due to floodwaters. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters. Localized business disruptions are likely in low-lying areas; some businesses might not operate at full capacity because of flood damage to facilities, possible evacuations, and some employees' inability to reach work sites.

Check route and public transport status before travel. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments. Allow extra time for travel in the affected area and plan alternative routes if necessary. Do not drive on flooded roads.
