Ukraine: Disruptions likely in Kyiv ahead of and during Aug. 24 Independence Day events
Authorities to introduce traffic restrictions in central Kyiv, Ukraine, ahead of, on Independence Day Aug. 24; disruptions likely.
Event
The Kyiv City Council (KCSA) will introduce traffic restrictions in central Kyiv, Aug. 20 and 22 to facilitate rehearsals for Independence Day events on Aug. 24. The main military parade will take place on Aug. 24 on Maidan Nezalezhnosti and Khreshchatyk Street, and the rehearsals will impact several roads in the vicinity. Associated road closures will be in effect from 15:30-01:15 on Aug. 20 and 22 and are likely Aug. 24 until the parade has concluded.
Additional short-term traffic restrictions are likely on nearby streets to facilitate further Independence Day events. In particular, veterans and their supporters plan to march from Taras Shevchenko Park to Maidan Nezalezhnosti at 14:00 on Aug. 24, and a commemorative concert will take place at the Olympic National Sports Complex stadium. Public transport services could be diverted during rehearsals and around Independence Day events. Access to parking lots in the city center will be prohibited Aug. 20, 22, and 24. Large numbers of people are likely to travel to Kyiv to participate in the events leading to increased traffic and public transport congestion, further exacerbating transport disruptions.
Advice
Take into account traffic restrictions and allow for additional time for travel in central Kyiv, Aug. 20-24. Check public transport schedules for disruptions.
