Chile: Health workers to stage nationwide strike and protest in Santiago, Sept. 1

Chile's health workers to strike nationwide and protest in Santiago, Sept 1; emergency services likely to remain available.

Warning

Event

Health sector unions, including the National Confederation of Municipal Health Workers (CONFUSAM), plan to stage a 24-hour nationwide strike and protest in Santiago on Sept. 1, in response to failed negotiations with the government over labor-related demands. Healthcare workers are likely to continue providing emergency medical services, COVID-19 testing, and COVID-19 vaccinations during the work stoppages; however, nonemergency public health services are likely to be affected across the country. Private health clinics will probably remain open during the action; however, increased demand for care at private facilities could disrupt services.

Participants have called for a march in Santiago along the La Alameda, otherwise known as Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins, on Sept. 1. The time and exact location where protesters will gather remains unclear, but previous protests by healthcare workers took place around the capital's Plaza Baquedano (also known as Plaza Italia or Plaza de la Dignidad). Protests in other cities are possible. These may materialize at public health facilities, including hospitals and clinics, and near major public squares.

Police will probably deploy to monitor all large gatherings. Clashes between police and anti-government protesters are common in Chile, and are possible during the health worker protests, especially in the capital. Localized transport disruptions are likely near all major rallies and outside public health facilities nationwide.

Advice

Confirm appointments at medical facilities and be prepared for some delays. Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Plan for localized traffic disruptions in urban centers, though especially in Santiago Sept. 1.
