Chile: Magnitude-6.4 offshore earthquake occurs in Pacific Ocean off Bio-Bio Region Sept. 21

Event

A magnitude-6.4 earthquake occurred in the Pacific Ocean off southern Chile at around 10:14 Sept. 21. The epicenter was about 81 km (50 miles) northwest of Arauco, Bio-Bio Region. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 13 km (8 miles), and light to moderate shaking was likely felt near the epicenter. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are likely over the coming days. Officials have not issued any tsunami advisories in response to the earthquake.
