China: Protests possible in Hong Kong from Sept. 8 after new arrests of pro-democracy advocates

Activists may protest in Hong Kong, China, following the arrests of pro-democracy advocates. Increased security, clashes possible.

Informational

Event

Pro-democracy activists could protest in the coming days after police arrested four members of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China, Sept. 8. Any demonstrations that take place are most likely near courthouses during hearings for the detained activists, though rallies in other locations cannot be ruled out. Dozens to a few hundred people may participate if any events take place.

Security personnel will almost certainly monitor any protests that take place; officers could disperse any unapproved demonstration. Clashes between police and demonstrators are possible. Protests may prompt localized traffic and business disruptions.

Context

The arrested group members reportedly refused to comply with a police request for information by the Sept. 7 deadline, claiming the request was illegal. Police allege the alliance, which organized Hong Kong's annual Tiananmen Square vigil, was working with foreign forces. Additional arrests are possible as a police investigation into the group continues.

Advice

Avoid any gatherings due to the potential for violence. If clashes break out nearby, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Heed all security personnel instructions.
