Honduras: Activists call for protest marches nationwide Sept. 15
Activists call for protest marches across Honduras, including in Tegucigalpa, Sept. 15. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.
Event
Activists affiliated with several labor unions, as well as the Liberal and Refoundation Party (Partido Libertad y Refundacion, LIBRE), plan to hold protest marches across Honduras Sept. 15 to coincide with the country's bicentennial Independence Day. The purpose of the demonstrations is to protest the policies of President Juan Orlando Hernandez and other labor-related grievances.
In Tegucigalpa, demonstrators plan to gather at Plaza Tigo from 07:00 and march into the the city center via Boulevard Morazan. The locations and start times for events outside the capital have not been confirmed; however, protests, as well as Independence Day celebrations, are likely in urban centers across Honduras Sept. 15.
Law enforcement will likely deploy to monitor the demonstrations. While gatherings are likely to remain largely peaceful, isolated clashes cannot be ruled out. Heightened security measures and large crowds will probably cause localized transport and business disruptions.
Advice
Avoid demonstrations. Allow additional time to reach destinations if operating in Honduras Sept. 15. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure location.
