Portugal: Public ferry workers to strike in Lisbon Sept. 21-23

Ferry workers to strike in Lisbon, Portugal, Sept. 21-23; service disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Ferry workers employed by Transtejo and Soflusa plan to hold partial strikes Sept. 21-23 to protest the lack of an agreement with management concerning wage adjustments. During the action, employees will walk off the job for three hours per shift. Union leaders have not announced specific time frames during which work will be suspended.

Unless averted, the work stoppages will probably disrupt ferry services connecting Lisbon and locations south of the Tagus River, resulting in delays and cancelations. Increased demand is likely for tickets on those ferry services that do operate. The Transtejo and Soflusa company runs passenger and vehicle ferries between the Portuguese capital and the districts of Almada and Setubal.

Advice

Check service status before travel if planning to use ferry service across the Tagus River during the strike. Consider alternative overland routes such as the A-2 and A-12 highways.
