Sudan: Activists plan to stage demonstrations in Khartoum Sept. 30

Activists plan demonstrations in Khartoum, Sudan, Sept. 30. Heightened security presence likely; transport disruptions and clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Activists are planning to stage demonstrations in Khartoum Sept. 30. Specifically, the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA) has called for a protest march in the capital to demand a return to civilian-led government in the country. Demonstrators will reportedly gather at Khartoum Railway Station and march northward on Al-Qasr Avenue toward the Republican Palace before turning westward on Al-Jamhuriya Avenue and concluding the march at the headquarters of the Empowerment Elimination, Anti-Corruption, and Funds Recovery Committee.

The US Embassy has also issued an alert for demonstrations planned in Khartoum Sept. 30, noting that participants may gather around Jackson Square and in other areas of downtown Khartoum. Organizers of the Sept. 30 rallies did not immediately announce when the demonstrations would begin; however, they will likely commence around 13:00.

Security forces are likely to deploy to all large, related public gatherings. Transport disruptions are possible near protest sites. Security forces may close bridges connecting Khartoum to Omdurman and Khartoum North; authorities may also close roads around the Republican Palace, the headquarters of the Empowerment Elimination, Anti-Corruption, and Funds Recovery Committee, and key ministries. Officials may restrict telecommunications in advance of and during the event. Clashes between activists and security forces cannot be ruled out. Additional, related demonstrations are possible over the near term, particularly if security forces forcibly disperse activists Sept. 30.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations and locations where security forces appear to be assembling. Adhere to authorities' instructions. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent rally venues; allow additional time to reach destinations in Khartoum Sept. 30.
