Further protests and clashes are possible in Zalingei, Central Darfur State, through early September after unrest left at least two people dead and 11 injured, Aug. 31. Security forces reportedly opened fire on students who had gathered to demand improved services at their university accommodation. Protesting students also reportedly set fire to a local government building. Following the violence, a state of emergency has been enacted in the area, along with an indefinite nightly 18:00-06:00 curfew.
Increased security measures, such as roadblocks and security checkpoints, are likely in the area in the coming days. Security force operations and further protests could prompt localized ground travel disruptions.
