Chile: Activists to protest in Santiago, Oct. 8
Activists to protest along Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins in Santiago, Chile, Oct. 8. Tight security likely.
Event
Activists affiliated with the Confederation of Students of Chile (Confederacion de Estudiantes de Chile, CONFECH) have called for demonstrations in Santiago Oct. 8. Participants will gather in front of Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center (GAM) from 16:30. The GAM is located on Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins, an avenue also widely known as Alameda, Calle Morande, and Calle Recoleta. Demonstrators will demand President Sebastian Pinera to step down after an international journalistic investigation, known as "Pandora Papers," revealed that the president's family allegedly benefited from offshore companies.
Demonstrators may deliberately block roads, and authorities may deploy tear gas to disperse them. Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor the demonstrations. There is an elevated threat of violence at demonstrations, especially at unauthorized gatherings and those that occur at night.
Advice
Avoid all protests. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure location. Heed the instructions of the authorities. Allow additional time for ground transport near the affected areas of Santiago Oct. 8.
