Warning

Event

President Sebastian Pinera's administration has imposed a State of Emergency in the provinces of Biobio and Arauco of the Biobio Region, and the provinces of Cautin and Malleco of the Araucania Region, through at least Oct. 27, due to recent increases in criminality and violent attacks against security forces in the area. The measure could be extended for an additional 15 days by the national government. Further extensions would need the approval of Congress.

Under the State of Emergency, the military will be allowed to deploy air, ground, and maritime units in the region and will support police efforts to impose public order and combat crime. The military leaders designated in these regions will be responsible for allowing or banning assemblies in public areas. They will also oversee the entry, exit, and transit of people in the area. The exact measures are unclear.

The emergency measures could result in some ground travel and business disruptions. Protests in response to the action are also possible. Any gatherings, particularly unauthorized events, could result in clashes with the security forces.

Advice

Strictly heed instructions of authorities. Confirm appointments in the area under State of Emergency before traveling there. Consider deferring nonessential travel in the region until the situation stabilizes and the State of Emergency is lifted. Avoid all protests.
