Chile: Unionized teachers to hold a nationwide strike and multiple marches Oct. 13

Teachers launch nationwide strike in Chile, to march in multiple locations, Oct. 13 to demand benefits.

Warning

Event

Teachers, affiliated with the Association of Teachers of Chile (Colegio de Profesores de Chile, CPC), have launched a 24-hour nationwide strike in Chile Oct. 13. They also plan to march in multiple locations. Teachers are protesting the national government's veto of a bill that would increase vacation days for teachers, and that contains additional assurances against dismissals.

The largest march is likely to occur in Santiago, where demonstrators intend to gather in Plaza Baquedano, starting at 10:30, and march to the intersection of Alameda (Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins Avenue) and Echaurren.

Confirmed demonstrations in other cities include the following:

  • Antofagasta: March from CPC offices to the intersection of Argentina and Prat, 10:00.

  • Concepcion: Plaza Peru, 12:00.

  • La Serena: Plaza Buenos Aires, 10:00.

  • Osorno: Plaza de Armas, 11:00.

  • Valparaiso: Plaza Sotomayor, 11:00.

Thousands of people may participate in the demonstration in Santiago, while other protests are likely to gather hundreds of people. Heightened security near the protest areas is likely; clashes are unlikely but cannot be ruled out. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach your destination if operating near the affected areas, especially in Santiago. Heed the instructions from authorities.
