Informational

Event

Doctors affiliated with the General Syndicate of Libyan Doctors (LGMC) have announced an indefinite nationwide strike beginning Nov. 7. The purpose of the action is to demand better working conditions and higher wages. While organizers have not announced plans for protests, associated demonstrations are possible outside the Ministry of Health in Tripoli, as well as near hospitals and government buildings throughout the country.

The strike will likely affect non-emergency health services at all government clinics and hospitals; facilities will continue to provide emergency treatment. It remains unclear if staff affiliated with private health clinics will participate in the Nov. 7 strike; however, potential increased demand for private health services could nevertheless create longer wait times at these facilities.

Security forces will almost certainly deploy to any potential protest sites. Localized transport disruptions are also likely near related demonstrations. Clashes between authorities and protesters are possible, especially if demonstrators refuse orders to disperse or are overly disruptive.

Advice

Confirm all appointments at medical facilities for the duration of the strike. Be prepared for delays at hospitals; call in advance, if possible, as conditions will likely vary by facility. Allow additional time for travel near potential gathering sites, including public hospitals and government buildings. Avoid all protests as a standard precaution.
