Militants reportedly killed 10 people and wounded another in the village of Abonkor, Tillaberi Region, late Oct. 11. Abonkor is located around 168 km (104 miles) north-northeast of Niamey, the capital of Niger, and 37 km (23 miles) south of the Malian border. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. The raid underscores the pervasive insecurity affecting much of Niger, and particularly the tri-border region where the borders of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso meet.

Similar militant attacks remain possible in the tri-border region over the medium term.

Context

Militants have killed dozens of people in attacks in Tillaberi Region in recent months. Armed bandits and militants regularly operate across southern Niger, notably around Lake Chad and in the tri-border region (i.e., where the borders of Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali meet).
