South Africa: NUMSA nationwide strike set to continue as of Oct. 19 /update 4

NUMSA nationwide strike set to continue across South Africa following failed negotiations as of Oct. 19; protests likey to continue

Informational

Event

The nationwide strike led by the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) will continue as of Oct. 19, as union representatives rejected another offer from the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (SEIFSA). The SEIFSA's second offer entailed a 6-percent increase in 2021, against NUMSA's initial 8-percent demand. Previously, the SEIFSA offered a 4.4-percent increase.

The strike concerns workers in the metal and engineering sector. NUMSA began by leading nationwide, largely peaceful demonstrations, Oct. 5. Sporadic, localized, and occasionally disruptive protests continue to be reported in multiple locations and are likely to persist during the strike. NUMSA has, as of Oct. 19, not called for any further protests.

Protests, either launched by NUMSA or regional bodies, may occur for the duration of the strike. Disruptions to related industries are likely. Security forces will likely deploy to all protests that materialize. Striking workers are likely to gather in city centers, near prominent government buildings, places of work, and NUMSA offices. Short-term, localized ground travel delays are likely near all protest sites. Clashes with security forces are possible if protesters engage in acts of public violence.

Advice

Avoid any demonstrations as a routine security precaution. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Reconfirm business appointments if operating with affected industries. Heed the instructions of local security forces.
