Additional anti-government demonstrations remain likely in Khartoum through at least late October. Thousands of protesters gathered outside the Presidential Palace in the city Oct. 16 and demanded that authorities dissolve the current transitional government. Protesters maintain that the government has failed to implement significant political and economic reforms and deliver justice and equality. Demonstrators chanted slogans supporting the country's military and called on its leadership to overthrow the current government. Meanwhile, pro-government supporters have called for demonstrations Oct. 21.

Increased security is likely near protests and potential gathering locations, such as major government buildings and public squares throughout Khartoum. Demonstrations in the capital city could draw tens of thousands of participants and are likely to occur near the Presidential Palace. Police may quickly resort to force and riot control tactics to disperse protesters, including tear gas, water cannon, and rubber bullets. Localized road and public transportation disruptions are occurring daily near protest locations.

Context

The security and political situation in Sudan remains fragile. A combination of military and civilian leaders have led the country since the overthrow of former President Omar al-Bashir regime in 2019.
