An explosion has been reported in the Lungala area along the Masaka-Kampala highway in the Mpigi District, the afternoon of Oct. 25. According to preliminary reports, an explosive device detonated on a commercial bus traveling between Masaka and Kampala. Casualties have been reported, though officials have not confirmed the exact figures. Security forces have been deployed and reportedly closed nearby roads.

Authorities will likely maintain increased security in the area over the coming hours. Localized transport disruptions are likely near the affected area through at least October 25.

Context

The incident follows a bombing that killed one person in Kampala late Oct. 23. The attack was claimed by the Islamic State. No group has claimed responsibility for the apparent Oct. 25 attack. A connection between the two incidents is yet to be established.
